Having some level of functional academic skills is important for promoting independence. The level of skills will vary by person, but to the extent possible basic academic skills should be taught. The following are examples of functional academic skills:
Math Skills: being able to use money, tell time, use or manage a bank account, paying and tipping at a restaurant, basic addition and subtraction, knowledge of basic measurements.
Reading Skills: being able to read symbols, interpret pictures, safety signs, reading directions (for example for taking medication), reading a recipe, reading a menu, following a schedule, using a calendar, gaining knowledge about topics, etc.
