Community & Recreation Skills



There are a number of functional community and recreation skills that are important for promoting independence. The level of skills will vary by person, but to the extent possible basic community skills should be taught. The following are example of functional community skills:

  • Learning a means of transportation to and from work, home, shopping, recreation.

  • Shopping for clothes, groceries, other items.

  • Eating at restaurants, ordering from a menu.

  • Navigating streets and communities successfully and safely.

  • Going to work.
